First day at Court

First day at Court

Last week was a good week for us!

We are proud to announce that LAC trustee, Esi Schimming-Chase has been appointed as Judge in the High Court of Namibia as from April 2021.
We congratulate Esi on her appointment as Judge and are confident that she will acquit herself well in this very demanding position.

Our young Social Justice team below had their first appearance in court.  They won their case in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court in the fight against domestic violence.  The SJP team successfully argued for an interim protection order to be made final.
The client NK had endured years of physical, emotional, sexual and economical abuse at the hands of her husband and father of her three minor children. The abuse mentioned were in some instances carried out in the presence of the minor children at the family’s common home.

Earlier this year our client received an interim protection order in terms of the Domestic Violence Act which she in this matter sought to make permanent, her husband opposed the finalization of the permanent protection order and as a result the LAC provided assistance with legal representation, prepared our clients and argued her case at the domestic court.
The LAC was successful in this matter as the domestic court granted our final protection order for a maximum period of 3 years. The court further ordered that the firearm used by our clients’ husband in the various threats and intimidations towards our client be remanded in the possession of the police until the divorce proceedings before the High Court between the parties is finalized. Our client was further advised that should her husband violate the conditions of the Protection Order, she can use the order to have her husband arrested.
