Communal Land and Local Authorities

Today the LAC held a stakeholder engagement event regarding “Communal Land and Local Authorities” with the presence of the newly appointed Ombudsman Basilius Dyakugha.

The presentation and discussions were focused around the ruling of the Supreme Court on Kashela Vs Katima Mulilo Town Council , whereby the court upheld the existence of customary land rights and the need to honour those rights, when communal land is transferred to local authorities.

Stakeholders such as Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, Ministry of Land Reform, the Ombudsman,  ALAN (Association of Local Authorities Namibia), NALAO (Namibia Local Authorities Officials Association) and Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC) attended the event and highlighted the fact, that communal land serves a specific purpose in Namibia and the objectives of development shall be in line with the needs of people living on communal land.
