Human Rights Day celebrated with exhibition
Windhoek, 25 November 2008 – the United Nations in Namibia, the Delegation of the European Commission to Namibia and the Legal Assistance Centre are pleased to invite you to the launch of an exhibition followed by a special film screening on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on Monday, 1 December 2008, at 18.30, at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre. Since its adoption in 1948, the Declaration has been, and continues to be, a source of inspiration for national and international efforts to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. The theme of this year’s anniversary celebration, “Dignity and justice for all of us,” reinforces the vision of the Declaration as a commitment to universal dignity and justice.
The 60th Anniversary will be celebrated worldwide and, here in Namibia, the Delegation of the European Commission to Namibia in partnership with the Legal Assistance Centre have joined hands with the United Nations in Namibia to commemorate this landmark event with an exciting programme of activities.
The exhibition will be launched by a keynote address by the Honorable Minister Madame Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana (Minister of Justice), an opening address by Mr. Simon Nhongo, UN Resident Coordinator, and an address by Dr Elisabeth Pape of the European Commission, with Mr. Norman Tjombe of the Legal Assistance Centre presiding as the Director of Ceremonies.
The use of visual images is arguably today the most popular form of artistic expression. They are both what influence us and what we dream of achieving even if subconsciously. Since International Human Rights Day represents an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the persistent human rights challenges and what further steps we, as stakeholders (governments, donors, citizens, etc.), can take to promote human rights, the exhibition will take us through the history of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its relevance today.
The celebration will be followed by refreshments and snacks and will continue with a film screening on human rights. The launch will kick off a week of events in the run up to 10 December 2008, Human Rights Day, designed to engage all Namibians to learn more about their human rights. Activities will include an “Ask the Legal Experts” programme aimed at students and a panel discussion on mining, the environment and human rights.
